Does well drilling cost include the pump? A well that has been drilled, cased and tested still does not deliver water to the house. The pump system does that, and whether it is in the price is one of the most common reasons two well quotes look far apart. This page explains how drillers handle it, what the pump system includes and what changes its cost, so you can compare quotes on the same scope. It does not quote prices: pump systems vary with depth, demand and region, and the only reliable number is an itemized local quote.
Is the pump included in well drilling quotes?
Drillers publish very different practices. Triangle J Water Wells, a North Texas driller, says its numbers are for complete, turnkey systems: drilling, pump installation, pressure tank, storage if needed, electrical, permitting and final inspection. Triangle J Water Wells: Cost to Drill a Water Well in North Texas Langford Drilling in Utah says it can do the complete system, and that its written estimate breaks out drilling and the pump system separately. Mad River Well Services in Connecticut describes a well and pump quote as two scopes bundled together: the drilling, and the mechanical installation of the pump, wiring, tank and pitless adapter. It says some quotes include both, while others cover drilling only and leave the mechanical work, trenching and tie-in to the homeowner or a separate contractor, and that comparing those two kinds of quote side by side is not like for like. | Quote type | What it usually covers | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Turnkey system | Drilling, pump, pressure tank, electrical and hookup, sometimes permits | Exactly which items and which brands, and what is excluded |
| Itemized | Drilling and pump system as separate lines | Whether the lines can be accepted separately |
| Drilling only | The borehole, casing and seal | Who will install the pump and connect the house, and when |
What does the pump system include?
Triangle J lists the parts that may make up a pump and pressure system: a submersible pump, drop pipe, wire, a pressure switch, a pressure tank, a storage tank if used and an optional booster pump. Triangle J Water Wells: Cost to Drill a Water Well in North Texas Mad River adds the pitless adapter, where the water line leaves the casing below ground. Mad River Well Services: What Actually Drives the Cost of a New Well and Pump System Sizing those parts is covered in what size well pump you need. What moves the cost of the pump system
- Depth. A deeper well needs more drop pipe and wire, and often a larger pump to lift water the extra distance. Triangle J Water Wells: Cost to Drill a Water Well in North Texas
- Demand. Pump size and tank capacity are matched to the household's water demand, and high-demand properties such as ranches may need a storage tank. Mad River Well Services: What Actually Drives the Cost of a New Well and Pump System
- Connection work. Trenching from the well to the house, conduit and the final tie-in can be included or excluded depending on the contractor.
- Electrical. Langford notes that a new home may need a service drop or panel work before the pump can run. Langford Drilling: Residential Well Drilling in Utah
- Treatment. Langford also lists hard water, iron or sulfur as reasons a softener or filtration system may be needed on top of the well; ask whether treatment is in the quote or a separate line. Langford Drilling: Residential Well Drilling in Utah

Who installs the pump?
Some companies drill and install pumps; others do only one side and subcontract the other. Mad River advises confirming which side of the job each quote covers. In Texas, the state licensing agency issues separate driller and pump installer licenses, as well as combination licenses. How to compare quotes on the pump
Ask every contractor to answer the same questions in writing:
- Is the pump system included, and which pump, tank and controls?
- Is the pitless adapter included?
- Is trenching to the house and the connection at the house included?
- Is the electrical work included, and who does it?
- Is a storage tank or booster pump needed for this property?
- What warranty covers the pump and the installation?
Then put the answers side by side with the drilling lines. The well drilling quote checklist has a printable comparison, and complete well installation cost lists the other lines a full budget needs. The well drilling cost guide explains why depth drives the drilling side of the bill.
Common questions
Does the drilling price include the pump?
It depends on the contractor. One North Texas driller says its figures are for complete turnkey systems including the pump and pressure tank; a Connecticut well company says some quotes cover drilling only and leave the mechanical work to the homeowner or another contractor. Ask each one directly and get it in writing.
What is included in a well pump system?
Usually a submersible pump, drop pipe, wire, a pressure switch or controls, a pressure tank and a pitless adapter where the water line leaves the casing. Some properties also need a storage tank or booster pump. Your installer sizes these to the well and the household.
What makes the pump system cost more?
Depth and demand. Drillers say a deeper well needs more drop pipe and wire and often a larger pump to lift the water. Higher household or livestock demand can call for bigger tanks or storage. Long runs to the house and electrical work add to the total.
Can a different company install the pump?
Yes, in many places. Some companies drill only, some do only the pump and mechanical work, and some do both. In some states pump installers are licensed separately from drillers, so check that whoever installs the pump holds the right license.
